The sizes are names, not measurements
The first thing that trips up new buyers: a piece of 3×3 white wood does not measure 3 inches by 3 inches. The name refers to the rough sawn size before the timber is planed and dried. What you receive is smaller.
This is normal across the trade and every yard in the UAE works the same way. But if you are cutting material schedules or designing packaging around timber dimensions, you need the actual numbers, not the trade names.
Actual dimensions of common sizes
White wood in the UAE is sold by inch based trade names with metric actual sizes. The most common sizes and their typical actual dimensions are:

Actual sizes vary a few millimetres between mills and between planed and rough sawn stock, so confirm on the quotation if the dimension is critical. Rough sawn material runs closer to the nominal size than planed material does.
Lengths sold in the UAE market
Most white wood lands here in lengths from 2.4m up to 6m, with 3m and 4m the fastest moving. Scandinavian and Romanian stock often comes in 5.1m and 6m lengths, which suits formwork and scaffolding related work where fewer joints matter. If your cutting list is built around short pieces, buying 3m lengths usually wastes less than cutting down 6m stock.
What white wood actually is
White wood is a trade name for light coloured softwood, mostly spruce and fir. In the UAE the supply comes mainly from Europe, with Romanian and Austrian spruce making up a big share, plus radiata pine from Chilean mills. The species differ slightly in weight and knot pattern but they are used interchangeably for most packing and construction work.
The grade matters more than the origin for most buyers. Sawfalling grade is the general mix and is what most packing and pallet work uses. Fifth grade and better selections carry fewer and smaller knots and go into work where appearance or consistent strength matters.
Kiln dried or green?
For anything that stays indoors or gets fixed into a structure, buy kiln dried. In Gulf humidity, green or partially dried softwood keeps shrinking and twisting after installation, and a warped 3×3 formwork soldier is scrap. Kiln dried stock, usually at 12 to 18 percent moisture content, has already done its moving.
For single use pallets and export crating, green stock is often acceptable and cheaper. One caution: if the crating is for export, ask for ISPM 15 heat treated material, because untreated softwood packaging gets stopped at many borders.
Buying tips that save money
Order by cutting list, not by cubic metre, when your usage is predictable. A decent whitewood supplier in UAE will quote per piece for standard sizes and that makes waste visible before you commit. Check a few pieces from the middle of the bundle on delivery, not just the outer layer. And if you need 3×3 or 4×4 in volume, confirm stock before sending a truck, because the square sections move out of yards faster than boards do.
